Major contributions during professional career:

Development of intra-hirsutum hybrids:

  • Development of Hybrid Om Shankar: First ever cotton hybrid ideally suited for the entire North Zone-Om Shankar~under irrigated conditions of the country. Hybrid CSHH-29~Om Shankar~was identified and released by the C. V. R. I. Committee for the states of Haryana. Punjab and Rajasthan on account of its superiority in yield performance to the local checks . The hybrid is a superior medium staple variety (26.4 mm) with 33.6% GOT and spinning capacity at 30s counts and maturity 170-175 days. ( Notification No. 17-85/97-SD.IV dated 05.02.97).
  • CSHH 198 (Shresth) : On account of its superiority in terms of seed cotton yield and quality characters over the check hybrids, the hybrid CSHH-198 was released for cultivation for the states of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana by C.V.R. Committee, Ministry of Agriculture, DAC, New Delhi . The hybrid is a superior medium staple variety (26.4 mm) with better strength length ratio (0.92) and spinning capacity at 50s counts.
  • CSHH 238 (Kalyan): The hybrid CSHH 238 recorded an overall mean seed cotton yield of 21.34 q/ha as against 17.54 q/ha of LHH 144 (cc) and 17.24 q/ha of local checks. On account of its superiority in terms of seed cotton yield (22% over zonal check and 24% over local checks) and consistent performance for fibre quality over the check hybrids, the hybrid CSHH-238 was released for cultivation for the states of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana by Central Varietal Release Committee, Ministry of Agriculture, DAC, New Delhi . (Notification No. 17-9/2006-SD.IV dated 06.02.07)
  • CSHH 243: The intra-hirsutum hybrid CSHH 243 recorded an increase of 7.6 % over zonalchecks and 11.9% over local check hybrids for lint yield and 2.5 % Span length of 26.7 mm, Fibre Strength of 24.0 g/ tex . In the Full Spinning Test the hybrid CSHH-243 recorded 2420 CSP value at 50s counts, 2088 at 60s counts. In view of higher yield potential and better fibre quality characters especially the high fibre strength of 24g/tex and resistance against Cotton Leaf Curl Virus, the hybrid CSHH 243 was released for cultivation under irrigated conditions in the North Zone by Central Varietal Release Committee, Ministry of Agriculture, DAC, New Delhi .( Notification No. 628 dated May, 8, 2008).

Development of hybrids and varieties of G. arboreum :

  • Release of intra-arboreum GMS based hybrid CICR -2: A GMS based intra arboreum (CICR-2 ) has 10% yield advantage over the first ever intra arboreum GMS based check hybrid, AAH-1 . It is moderately resistant to Fusarium wilt. The hybrid CICR 2 is an early maturing hybrid with maturity duration of 160-170 days suitable for cotton-wheat cropping system in the Zone. It has potential yield of 32 Q / ha. (Notification No. 17-9/2006-SD.IV dated 06.02.07 ).
  • Release of G . arboreum variety CISA 310 for North zone . The variety CISA 310 has shown over all yield superiority in both seed cotton and lint yield. Its fibre quality is better (20.2mm) than the ruling G. arboreum varieties of the Zone, Boll worm damage of this variety also lesser than the checks RG-8 and LD-327. Synchronous fluffy opening enables its harvest in 2-3 pickings in 140-150 days and is therefore, suitable for cotton-wheat cropping system of the North Zone. It has yield potential of 21 Q / ha.
  • Release of G . arboreum variety G. arboreum variety CISA-614

Development of CMS and GMS and restorer lines :

  • Conversion of parents into CMS and restorer lines: All the popular cultivars of the North Zone Viz., H 777, Pusa 31, F 414, LH 1134, RB 281, Jhurar, F 1183 and F 505, K 34007, PIL-8, PIL-43 , SH 2379, CISV-1, CISV-2 have been converted into CMS lines.
  • Development of GMS lines: Twelve genetic male sterile lines (GMS) of American cotton ( G. hirsutum . ) were converted by using Gregg male sterile line governed by two recessive genes The GMS lines developed are K34007, Laxmi, CSHG-4, CSHG-1251, CSHG 1253, CSHG-1257, CSHG 1258, CSHG-12517, CSHG-12519, CSHG 18512, CSHG-18516, CSHG 18517.
  • Development of restorer lines : 15 New restorer lines viz CIR 97P1, CIR 97P3, CIR 119P1, CIR 119P3, CIR 526P1, CIR 526P3, CIR 926P2, CIR 926 P3, CIR 1169P1 and CIR 1169 P2 have been developed through pedigree method which possess the restorer genes.

Registration of genetic stocks :

  • Registered two bollworm and Jassid tolerant cytoplasmic diverse strain of G. hirsutum BN-Tom-277 (INGR No. 05019) and BN-ARB-16 (INGR No. 05020) with NBPGR, New Delhi .
  • Registered two bollworm and Jassid tolerant Morphotypes diverse strain of G. hirsutum BN-Red-277 (INGR No. 07049) and BN-Okra-16 (INGR No. 07050) with NBPGR, New Delhi .
  • The Cotton germplasm, CIR-8,CIR-12,CIR-23,CIR-26,CIR-32,CIR-38 and CIR-47 as CMS restorer lines with red plant with bicolor flower, CMS restorer line with green plant with yellow petal and anther, CMS green plant with yellow petal and cream anther, CMS with good fibre properties and agronomic attributes & restorer of fertility in G. harknessii based CMS, CMS green plant with yellow petal and cream anther & bold seed, CMS Okra type with yellow petal and anther, CMS green plant with yellow petal &anther with highest boll weight. These have been provided with National Identities, IC553921, IC553923, IC553924, IC553925 IC553926, IC553927, and IC553928, and Registration numbers, INGR No. 08031, 08032, 08033, 08034, 08035 08036and 08037, respectively
