RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROGRESS

  • Breeding for earliness, compact plant type and jassid tolerance in cotton: Identified most promising lines for early maturity, compact plant type, jassid tolerance, yield and fibre quality in upland cotton upon replicated evaluation of cotton germplasm lines. Identified segregating G hirsutum lines which have compact plant architecture, jassid tolerance and early maturity (130DAS) through selection which are under stabilization.
  • Conservation of Genetic Resources: Cotton varietal germplasm was conserved in perennial form as Varietal Garden at ICAR CICR, Nagpur. A total of 68 cotton varieties (G hirsutum-49, G barbadense-2, G arboreum-14 and G herbaceum-3) were conserved and are being maintained.
  • Genetic diversity and DNA Fingerprinting: Identified promising SSR markers which have higher polymorphic ability among G hirsutum lines using those genetic diversity was assessed and a draft DNA fingerprint of popular public sector varieties and private sector hybrids of cotton was developed. The parents of six hybrids (5 G. hirsutum and 1 G. arboreum) and two G. arboreum varieties were DNA fingerprinted to facilitate technology commercialization through Public-Private Partnership.
  • Marker Assisted Introgression Breeding: Two indigenously developed transgenic events in upland cotton viz., Tg2E-13 event (cry1Ac gene) and CH-12 event (cry2Ax1 gene) from Delhi University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, respectively are being introgressed into elite cotton varieties through marker assisted backcross breeding.
