Major contributions during professional career
Area: Induced host plant resistance

  • CINH Ti 1, CINH Ti 2, CINH Ti 3 and CINH Ti 4 have been developed using marker assisted selection.

  • Identification of an inducible defense response in cotton that confers tolerance to H. armigera.

  • Screening of wild germplasm lines for the presence of protease inhibitors

  • Biochemical characterisation of induced defences in LRA 5166 and NHH 44

  • Biochemical basis of constitutive and induced host plant resistance in cotton.

  • Protocols have been standardised for the quantification of rutin, quercetin, chlorogenic acid in cotton plant tissues using thin layer chromatography.

Area: Host plant resistance and its practical utility

  • Genotypes with elite fibre properties have been short listed with comprehensive pest tolerance that can be grown without plant protection under low input rain-fed condition to yield a minimum of 8Q/Ha.

  • Genotypes have been short-listed with comprehensive pest tolerance and elite fibre properties that can be used as donors for insect tolerance in breeding programs.

Area: Insect related transgenes and their use in cotton

  • Assessment of suitability of Bt toxins for cotton ecosystem.

  • Estimation of frequency of resistance alleles and toxicity of Cry toxins to geographical populations of spotted bollworm , Earias vittella.

  • Development of Cry toxin bioassay suitable for the spotted bollworm, Earias sps .

  • Monitoring changes in baseline susceptibility to the released insect related transgene events in geographical populations of H. armigera since 2002.

Area: Molecular entomology with reference to genetic diversity and taxonomy

  • Development of biochemical, molecular and taxonomic tools for the identification of intra-specific variation in the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera

  • Absence of genetic variation demonstrated using molecular tools in the cotton mealy bug Phenacoccus solenopsis to prove that it is an introduced pest in India.

Area: Integrated pest management in Bt cotton

  • One year data on ETL for Spodoptera on BG and non- Bt available.
