Current Research Area:

  • Formulation of sustainable strategies on the cotton pest management.
  • Resistance and resurgence monitoring in insect-pests against Cry toxins and insecticides on Pink Bollworm and other Bollworms on Cotton.

Achievements:

  • The monophasic diet of cotton seed flour was developed for rearing of pink bollworm at laboratory conditions. The larvae were reared from neonates till pupation on a single diet.
  • Standardized protocols for Pink bollworm resistance monitoring under laboratory.
  • Standardized protocols for  Pink bollworm rearing in artificial diet
  • In North India and South India population of Pink bollworm was nil on Bollgard and Bollgard II. In Central India some of the genotypes were noticed the survival of PBW on Bt cotton at 175 to 180 DAS
  • Standardize and short list for insect pests susceptible for G.hirsutum and G.arborium genotypes under HDPS.
  • Incidence of pink bollworm was observed on extended Bt cotton being cultivated in Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar districts of Maharashtra. The percent survival of pink bollworm in Nandurbar on BG (26.14 %) and non Bt (0.45%) in Dhule on BG (19.80%) and non Bt (6.92%) and in Jalgaon on BG (18.18 %) and non Bt (25.89 %) was observed
  • Diagnostic dose bioassays wit Cry1Ac were conducted for populations of pink bollworm collected from different location of India on Bt and non Bt cotton fields using diagnostic doses viz. 10 ppm, 1 ppm and 0.1 ppm. Cent  per cent mortality was recorded over the control at 10 ppm and more than 50.00 per cent mortality at 1 ppm in non Bt population but PBW populations collected from Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon on extended BG  less than 100.00 per cent mortality over control was recorded at the diagnostic dose of 10ppm.
  • Developed sucking pest’s management protocol under HDPS system in India.
  • The population collected from Gujarat of Surat and Bhavnagar was shown less susceptibility to Cry1Ac of 10 ppm as compared to susceptible population.
  • Resistance to Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab in pink bollworm populations collected during 2013-2014 was monitored.  Srivelliputtur, Sirsa, Junagadh and Khandwa recorded 2, 9, 4, and 20 fold resistance to Cry1Ac over susceptible check. Faridkot, Mansa, Sirsa, Rahuri, Akola, Junagadh and Khandwa populations of pink bollworm recorded 25, 35, 35, 30, 40, 45, 140 and 330 fold resistances over the susceptible check to Cry2Ab.
  • Developed data base on pink bollworm resistance monitoring with different Cry toxins in India.
  • Reported Endoparasitoid of Bracon lefroyi (Dudgeon and Gough) of Pink bollworm causing natural mortality in field population of Central India.
  • Resistance to Cry1Ac in Vadodara Bt, Surat NBt, Amreli NBt and Srivilliputtur NBt recorded 17, 14, 13, and 12 fold resistance to Cry1Ac over susceptible check.  Resistance to Cry2Ab in Bharuch, Anand NBt, Junagadh NBt , Amreli Bt and  Srivilliputtur NBt populations of pink bollworm recorded 407, 105, 55, 28 and 4 fold resistances over the susceptible check. The population collated on Bt cotton were shown less susceptibility to the Cry1 Ac and Cry2Ab as compared to susceptible population.
  • Pink bollworm infestation was monitored in Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Rajkot, Surendranagar and Ahmadabad districts of Gujarat.  The pink bollworm infestation was observed in flowers of different Bollgard-II hybrids ranging upto 80.00% at (60 to DAS crops). The infestation on green bolls ranging 10-80 % infestation at 120DAS crop.

Area: Insect related transgenic and their use in cotton

  • Assessment of suitability of Bt toxins for cotton ecosystem.
  • Estimation of frequency of resistance alleles and toxicity of Cry toxins to geographical populations of Pink bollworm.
  • Development of Cry toxin bioassay suitable for the Pink bollworm.
  • Monitoring changes in baseline susceptibility to the released insect related transgene events in geographical populations of Pink bollworm since 2010.
